McCain still got 48% of the vote, after all. The whole US system is also set up such that it collapses to two-parties, which generally makes it easier to reform an existing one than start fresh. The third possibility is that for the next couple elections they fail to show any growth and eventually get replaced by a third party that follows one of the routes above.
