Lots of new developments in the Jim Watson controversy_
While I certainly feel that Watson should have been condemned for his remarks (and was, soundly), I honestly don't know whether the suspension was the right reaction or not. There's something to be said for academic freedom and the right to hold ridiculous views (provided, of course, that everyone else has the right to ridicule them as such).
Then again, Watson is the public face of Cold Spring Harbor, and I can understand why they might want to distance themselves from that kind of remark. This now is beginning to resemble the Larry Summers fiasco. In the end, I suppose, it's going to be a decision that the folks at CSH will have to hash out.
